Photo of the Week 9 – Close up and Personal
New pic of the week:

Áine and Finn, close up and personal.
You probably can’t tell from that pic (or the other ones that I’ve added to my Finn set) but he’s started to fill out a bit. He’s no longer as wrinkly as he was when he was born and he’s starting to look less and less like a new-born. What that picture does give you some indication of is how alert he is – at 16 days old, it’s still too early for fine motor control, even of his head, but he is staring at our faces for minutes at a time (he’s barely two weeks old, he can be forgiven for having a short attention span!). Áine and I are getting really excited about seeing his first real smile – apparently it happens around the fourth week, so we’re almost there.
So what have the first two weeks been like? I’d be lying if I said they weren’t tough – I won’t go into all of the reasons why just now – but they have been great fun. Okay, so to other people he’s probably not particularly exciting at the moment – really, all he’s done up to now is drink and sleep and, well, poo and pee, but Áine and I both find all of those things endlessly fascinating.
At this point in his life, he spends most of his time asleep which is great because it gives us an opportunity to get those things done that we need to do such as tidying the house, making up his bottles and spending a bit of time in the adult world. We love when he drinks as well, because that’s pretty much the only time that he’s awake and we can goo and gaa and try to see how much he’s responding to our nonsensical baby-talk. The pooping and peeing stuff is probably a little less fun (to say the least), but hey – you don’t mind so much when it’s your own baby. To give him his due, his timing is impeccable: he nearly always manages to retain his bodily functions so that he’s peeing just after you’ve slid the old nappy out from underneath him and are about to put the new one down.
